An Integer Programming Model for the Selection of Pumped?Hydro Storage Projects

Energy storage systems - in particular, Pumped Hydropower Storage (PHS) will be increasingly important to support the transition of power toward zero emissions. The reason is that PHS can mitigate variability and uncertainty renewable energy production from solar wind balance electricity demand with supply. In this paper, we propose an integer programming problem for siting uses a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) meet requirement. It assumes existence reservoir, lake, or river, decides where build reservoir constitute existing body water. This model finds minimum-cost project candidates given parameters such as desired head, power, operation time. paper discusses different solution methods assure closure avoid its fragmentation. A heuristic explores representations DEM, more aggregate precise, sequentially refine based on last selected site, which reduces computational effort. formulation general objective function includes both construction equipment costs.
